NHL Playoffs Tuesday 5-3

NHL STANLEY CUP PLAYOFFS SCOREBOARD…
Pittsburgh 4 – N.Y. RANGERS 3 (OT)… Evgeni Malkin scored off a deflection 5:58 into the third overtime to send the Penguins past the Rangers in the Eastern Conference first-round playoff series opener. Jake Guentzel netted a pair of goals. Bryan Rust had a goal and two assists. Sidney Crosby set up two goals for Pittsburgh, which hosts Game 2 tomorrow.

Washington 4 – FLORIDA 2…  The Capitals came from a goal down entering the third period to double up on the Panthers in the opener of the Eastern Conference first-round playoff series. T.J. Oshie scored the go-ahead goal midway through the third period. The series stays in Florida for tomorrow’s Game 2.

COLORADO 7 – Nashville 2… The Avalanche opened with a five-goal first period and never looked back in their romp over the Predators to open the Western Conference first-round playoff series. Nathan MacKinnon and Devon Toews scored 22 seconds apart during the barrage. MacKinnon added a third-period goal. Game 2 is tomorrow in Denver.

CALGARY 1 – Dallas 0… Jacob Markstrom stopped all 16 shots and the Flames blanked the Stars in the opener of the Western Conference first-round playoff series.  Elias Lindholm scored the game’s only goal on a power play early in the first period. The series remains in Calgary for Game 2 tomorrow.
