William Arlan “Bill” Barnes

William Arlan, “Bill” Barnes, age 77, formerly of Knox County, Missouri, passed away March 10th, 2022, in Des Plaines, Illinois.

Bill was born August 4th, 1944, in Highland Park, Illinois, the son of William Arlan “Bill” and Blanche Mildred Sultz Barnes.

He attended Edina High School and graduated in the Class of 1962. After graduation he served his country in the United States Marine Corp from 1963 to 1969, and was honorably discharged with the rank of Corporal, at the Camp Lejeune Marine Base in North Carolina.

In October 1967 Bill married Karen Swann and to this union a daughter, Angela was born. In September 1979, he married Ellen Heppner and to this union two children were born, Brett and Bridget.

Bill was raised in Edina, Missouri, after his marriage he moved to the Chicago, Illinois area where he worked as an accountant for many years. In high school, Bill was a talented basketball and baseball player. An avid sports fan, Bill looked forward to attending and following his grandson’s high school/college football games. He also enjoyed watching Northwestern’s and Loyola’s Basketball Teams as well as the Florida Gators. A Chicago Bears, Cubs and Sox fan, Bill enjoyed sharing sporting highlights with his best friend of over 50 years, Jerry Swickert during their daily calls. Bill’s hobbies included hunting deer, elk, and bird with his brother and friends. Bill loved hunting immensely and served as the Secretary for the National Archery Association. Bill also enjoyed bowling and was a league player on the Immanuel Lutheran Church bowling team.

A father of three, he is survived by his children, Angela Barnes of O’Fallon, Illinois; Brett (Briann) Barnes of Chicago, Illinois; and Bridget Barnes Brooks of Hobart, Indiana; a grandfather of seven grandchildren, Caitlyn Barnes (29) and Austin William Barnes (27) of O’Fallon, Illinois; Adelaide (11), Matilda (9), Arden (7), Anselm (5) and Cyprian (3) Brooks of Hobart, Indiana; his great-grandchildren Skylar (9) and Briston (4) Barnes of O’Fallon, Illinois. Bill is also survived by his brother, Don (Betsy) Barnes of Monroe City, Missouri; and nephews Grant (Brenda) Barnes of Hartland, Wisconsin, and Chris (Erica) Barnes of Palmyra, Missouri; a sister, Sharon Barnes of Rio Rancho, New Mexico; and nieces, Amber Schieldge, Tara Schieldge, and Crystal Schieldge Bryer.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents Bill and Blanche Barnes.

A Memorial Service will be at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, April 2, 2022 at the Doss Funeral Home in Edina, Missouri, with the family receiving friends Saturday, after 1:00 p.m. prior to the service. Full Military Honors will be accorded by the Cyril A Graham American Legion Post of Edina, Missouri.

Inurnment at the Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, in St. Louis, Missouri, will be held at a future date.
