Vera Bragg

Veva (Speake) Bragg, 92, Of La Plata, Missouri passed away Saturday, January 4, 2020 at the Macon Health Care Center where she had been a resident for one month.

Born in Donnellson, Iowa on July 28, 1927, she was the daughter of Charles and Rose Speake. The youngest daughter with four sisters and five brothers, Veva grew up and attended school in the Montrose, Iowa area.
On July 2, 1947, she was united in marriage to Paul James Bragg, who preceded her in death on October 1, 1982. Also preceding her in death were her parents, her nine siblings, and one grandchild in infancy, Paul Yancey Brammer.

Veva is survived by her four children, James Edward Bragg and wife Carolyn of rural Novinger, Paul Anthony (Tony) Bragg and wife Marilyn of rural Queen City, Rebecca (Becky) Bragg of La Plata and Cynthia (Cindy) Randall and husband Bert, also of La Plata; seven grandchildren, James Bragg, Sarah Plato, Tracey Bender, Tammy Cody, John Bragg, Jeremy Randall, and Scott Randall; sixteen great grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Veva was employed for a time at Schaeffer Pen Company in Ft. Madison, IA. After the birth of her first child, the family moved to Gibbs, Missouri, and then to La Plata in 1962. Veva was a member of the La Plata chapter of TOPPS for several years and was proud of the milestones she achieved there.

One of Veva’s greatest enjoyments was her years of babysitting her grandchildren. Until forced to stop due to health reasons, Veva babysat for several other children in the community. They all came to know her as grandma.

Veva was fond of the family pets. People close to her will remember her cat “Monkey” with mixed feelings.

She was a member of East Center Community Church at Kirksville, Missouri. She loved the country drive to the church and when we stopped the car along the way to talk to the cows and horses. However, most of all, she loved the fellowship and attention from her church family.

Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 7, 2020 at Travis Funeral Chapel in La Plata, Missouri. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in the La Plata Cemetery.

Memorials in memory of Veva Bragg may be made to East Center Community Church or to the Alzheimer’s Association. They may be sent to or left at Travis Funeral Chapel, 125 S. Church St., La Plata, MO 63549.
