The Kirksville Tigers played a great second half and came from behind to beat Chillicothe 45-41. The Tigers trailed by eight, 27-19 going into the third period, then turned up the defense as well as the offense, outscoring the Hornets 12-6 in the third and trailed by just two 33-31 at the end of the period. In the waning moments of the game and the score tied at 41-41, KHS came up with a big steal, Logan Martin went to the basket and got fouled with 33 seconds left. Martin made his two free throws to give the Tigers a 43-41 lead. Chillicothe’s Soljier Allen got caught traveling and gave the Tigers the ball back. Chillicothe was forced to foul four times just to get Kirksville to the free throw line. Finally, with five seconds left, Jace Kent, who earlier got smacked in the face which gave him a bloody nose, went to the free throw line with a cotton ball stuffed up his nostril. Chillicothe’s coach tried to ice Kent with a time out, but Kent made his first free throw to give the Tigers a three point lead. Another Chillicothe time out left Kent with a big smile on his face before he calmly made the second free throw to put the game away, 45-41. Kent led a balanced scoring attack with 10, Kyle White scored nine, seven for Bennett Fraser who really made big strides Monday, six for Logan Martin. KHS climbs to 16-9 and will look to close out the regular season with a win at Marshall Tuesday in part two of our double header.
