KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – The first great running back in the history of the Kansas City Chiefs organization died Thursday.
The Chiefs announced that former Dallas Texans and Kansas City Chiefs running back Abner Haynes has died. He was 86.
Haynes was an original Dallas Texan and won the American Football League’s Player and Rookie of the Year in 1960 during the AFL’s inaugural season. He spent five seasons with the organization and was named to the All-AFL team during the first three seasons of his career.
Across 70 regular season games from 1960-64, Haynes led the club in rushing in four of his five seasons with the team. He ranks sixth in team history with 8,473 career combined net yards. In 1962, he became the franchise’s first 1,000-yard rusher.
Haynes, a North Texas State College (now University of North Texas) alum, was inducted into the North Texas Athletic Hall of fame in 1986. He was inducted into the Chiefs Hall of Fame in 1991.
After five seasons with the Dallas Texans and Kansas City Chiefs, Haynes left Kansas City to finish his career with stints with the Denver Broncos, Miami Dolphins and New York Jets.
