Cubs Shut Out Cardinals

Kyle Hendricks carried a shutout into the eighth inning and Nico Hoerner homered to help the Chicago Cubs to a 3-0 win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday night. Ian Happ also drove in a run for Chicago with an RBI double in the fifth.

Hendricks (3-6) continued his mastery over the Cardinals, He gave up five hits in 7 1/3 scoreless innings, struck out six and walked one.

Andre Pallante (2-3) gave up three runs on seven hits over six innings. He struck out two and walked three.

St. Louis LHP Steven Matz threw a lengthy bullpen session Friday. He’s expected to start at Triple-A Memphis on Tuesday. He has been out since May 23 with left shoulder impingement. RHP Drew VerHagen was placed on the 15-day injured list list with right shoulder impingement. LHP Packy Naughton (0-2, 5.40) was recalled from Triple-A Memphis.

St. Louis RHP Miles Mikolas (5-5, 2.64) will face RHP Adrian Sampson (0-0, 0.00) in the second game of the three-game series Saturday afternoon, 12:20 with the pregame and the first pitch at 1;15 on KIRX.

Toronto beat Milwaukee 9-4, so the Cardinals and Brewers are tied for first in the NL Central.
