Cardinals Streak Reaches Fourteen

The St. Louis Cardinals used homers by Paul Goldschmidt and Tyler O’Neill to top the Chicago Cubs 8-5 in the opener of a doubleheader.

St. Louis also got a pinch-hit homer from José Rondón, and leadoff man Tommy Edman finished with three hits. Alex Reyes (10-8) got five outs for the win, and Giovanny Gallegos tossed a perfect seventh for his 13th save.

Then the Cardinals upended the Cubs 12-4 in the nightcap to extend their record tying winning streak to 14 games.  That matches the longest win streak in franchise history, doing it previously in 1935.

Daniel Hudson got the win in relief, his first this season.

Tyler O’Neill and Lars Nootbarr each drove in three runs.

John Lester goes for the Cardinals Saturday afternoon, 12:25 with the pregame and the first pitch at 1:20 on KIRX.

The Brewers beat the Mets 5-1, so the Brewers lead in the NL Central is at 7 games.  The Cardinals still have a solid hold on the number two wildcard spot.
