Cincinnati 1 – PITTSBURGH 0… Tyler Mahle (12-5) pitched five-hit ball over six innings and three relievers preserved the Reds’ shutout off the Pirates. Asdrubal Cabrera’s sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh inning scored pinch-runner Delino DeShields, Jr., with the game’s only run.
San Diego 7 – SAN FRANCISCO 4… The Padres used a three-run top of the eighth inning to put away the Giants and move within half a game of idle St. Louis for the second NL wild card. Fernando Tatis Jr. hit his NL-leading 39th home run. Tommy Pham stroked a two-run double. Manny Machado singled home two more runs.
PHILADELPHIA 17 – Chi. Cubs 8… The Phillies erased an early seven-run deficit to roll past the Cubs. Andrew McCutchen’s two-run double sparked a seven-run bottom of the seventh inning. Bryce Harper went 3-for-4 with an RBI double and a three-run homer.
Colorado – ATLANTA (ppd)… A soggy field in Atlanta forced postponement of yesterday’s Rockies-Braves game. No makeup date has been announced.
AMERICAN LEAGUE
TAMPA BAY 5 – Detroit 2… Six pitchers kept the Tigers at bay and the Rays breezed to the win. Yandy Diaz homered to lead off the bottom of the first inning. Mike Zunino added a two-run shot in the sixth. Tampa Bay increased its lead atop the AL East to eight games.
BALTIMORE 3 – N.Y. Yankees 2 (10 innings)… Austin Hays singled home Jahmai Jones with the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Orioles a come-from-behind win over the Yankees. Kelvin Gutierrez raced home with the tying run in the ninth on a wild pitch. The loss dropped New York a half-game behind Toronto and Boston in the AL wild-card race.
Houston 12 – TEXAS 1… The Astros scored seven runs in the top of the fourth inning and never looked back in their thrashing of the Rangers. Carlos Correa’s three-run homer sparked the uprising. Chas McCormick added a two-run shot in the eighth.
Oakland 7 – KANSAS CITY 2… The Athletics cruised past the Royals after spotting them a two-run first-inning lead. Chad Pinder lined a tie-breaking two-run single during a four-run top of the third inning. Kansas City’s Salvador Perez hit his 45th homer to tie Johnny Bench’s record for homers in a season by a catcher.
L.A. Angels 9 – CHI. WHITE SOX 3… Luis Rengifo and Jose Rojas belted two-run homers to lead the Angels in their pounding of the White Sox. Alex Cobb (8-3) limited Chicago to two hits over five scoreless innings.
