NATIONAL LEAGUE
St. Louis 5 – CINCINNATI 4… Paul Goldschmidt’s second homer of the game came with a runner aboard in the top of the fourth inning and gave the Cardinals the lead for good in their win over the Reds in the opener of a doubleheader. Harrison Bader also went deep for St. Louis.
CINCINNATI 12 – St. Louis 2 (7 innings)… The Reds used a seven-run bottom of the second inning to bury the Cardinals and claim a split of the twinbill. Nick Castellanos unloaded a grand slam and Kyle Farmer homered with a runner aboard during the uprising. Castellanos staked Cincinnati to a quick lead with a two-run homer in the first. Kyle Farmer also homered with a runner aboard and Eugenio Suarez added a solo shot.
ARIZONA 8 – San Diego 3… Josh VanMeter’s two-run homer highlighted a six-run bottom of the third inning and the Diamondbacks cruised past the Padres. Pavin Smith went 3-for-4 with an RBI double.
Milwaukee 5 – SAN FRANCISCO 2… Jace Peterson singled home Lorenzo Cain with a tie-breaking run in the top of the seventh and the Brewers went on to win their fourth straight and knock the Giants out of first place for the first time since April 25. Lorenzo Cain homered to lead of the ninth.
L.A. DODGERS 5 – Atlanta 3… Justin Turner and AJ Pollock produced run-scoring singles in the bottom of the eighth inning to rally the Dodgers past the Braves. Max Muncy and Austin Barnes smacked solo homers for L.A. victory moved the Dodgers a half-game ahead of San Francisco atop the NL West.
N.Y. METS – Miami – N.Y. METS… Rain in New York forced postponement of last night’s Marlins-Mets game. It has been rescheduled as part of doubleheader on September 28.
Philadelphia – WASHINGTON (ppd)… Rain in the nation’s capital forced postponement of last night’s Phillies-Nationals game. It has been rescheduled for today.
AMERICAN LEAGUE
SEATTLE 1 – Houston 0… Abraham Toro’s sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth inning scored J.P. Crawford with the game’s only run as the Mariners clipped the Astros. Five Seattle pitchers combined to blank Houston on nine hits.
TORONTO 5 – Baltimore 4… Randal Grichuk lifted a tie-breaking sacrifice fly in the eighth inning and the Blue Jays hung on to edge the Orioles. Marcus Semien homered with the bases empty. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. had two hits and knocked in two runs.
N.Y. Yankees 4 – L.A. ANGLES 1… Gerrit Cole (14-6) allowed a run on four hits and racked up a season-high 15 strikeouts over seven innings and the Yankees snapped their four-game skid. Luke Voit opened the scoring with a two-run single in the top of the third inning. Aaron Judge added his 30th homer in the eighth.
DETROIT 8 – Oakland 6… Miguel Cabrera hit a two-run homer and singled home the go-ahead run in the bottom of the seventh inning as the Tigers came from behind to down the Athletics and snap a four-game skid. Harold Castro went 3-for-4 with an RBI single and a solo homer. Akil Baddoo also went deep.
Boston 3 – TAMPA BAY 2… Jarren Duran singled home Raphael Devers with a tie-breaking run in the top of the ninth inning and the Red Sox dealt the Rays their first loss in 10 games. Christian Vazquez’ solo homer tied the game in the seventh.
Cleveland 5 – KANSAS CITY 3 (11 innings)… The Indians beat the Royals for the 10th straight time after spotting them a three-run lead. Austin Hedges’ single in the top of the 11th inning scored pinch-runner Daniel Johnson with a tie-breaking run. Yu Chang homered for Cleveland, which got on the board with a pair of unearned runs in the fifth.
INTERLEAGUE
Colorado 9 – TEXAS 5… Brendan Rodgers’ two-run double sparked a five-run top of the ninth inning that carried the Rockies past the Rangers. Rodgers also smacked a solo homer in the fourth. Four Texas errors accounted for three unearned runs.
Chicago Cubs 3 – MINNESOTA 0… Justin Steele (3-2) limited the Twins to one hit over five innings and reliever Adbert Alzolay allowed just one hit the rest of the way in the Cubs’ blanking of the Twins. Frank Schwindel provided the game’s only offense with a three-run homer in the top of the third inning.
CHI. WHITE SOX 6 – Pittsburgh 3… Carlos Rodon (11-5) held the Pirates to a run on five hits over five innings and the White Sox doubled up on the Pirates. Rookie Gavin Sheets homered twice and drove in four runs.
