William Steven “Billy” Steele

William Steven “Billy” Steele, 74, of Milan, Missouri, passed away on August 22, 2025. He was born on April 29, 1951, in Kirksville, Missouri, the son of Glen Junior Steele and Lottie Mae (Campbell) Steele, who both preceded him in death, along with his grandfather, William Glen Steele. After the passing of his parents, a very special aunt, lovingly known as Aunt Dode, was very dear and true to the Steele family’s hearts.

Billy grew up in north Missouri and attended Milan C-2 School, graduating with the class of 1969. He later went on to earn an Associate’s Degree in Agricultural Business from Trenton College, reflecting his lifelong love of farming and the land. He farmed for several years before later becoming an over-the-road truck driver, a career that carried him to many states across the country and gave him countless experiences and stories to share.

Billy lived a life defined by kindness, loyalty, and his steady presence among family and friends. He never married or had children of his own, but he poured his love into those around him, leaving behind countless memories that will be cherished.

His hobbies reflected his deep appreciation for the simple joys of life. He loved farming and especially enjoyed being able to ride along with good friends in their tractors. In his later years, Billy found joy in fishing and hunting, often sharing these pastimes with family and friends.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Milan, Missouri, where his faith and community were important parts of his life. He was also a proud member of the Milan Elks Lodge, an organization that held great meaning for him throughout his life.

He is survived by his siblings: Pam Jarding and husband Jim of Chillicothe, Missouri; Greg Steele and wife Terri of Independence, Missouri; Ronnie Steele and wife Colleen of Independence, Missouri; Janet Callihan and husband David of Milan, Missouri; and Kevin Steele of Indianapolis, Indiana. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews, all of whom he enjoyed very much.

Growing up, he shared a special bond with several first cousins who were considered more like siblings: Paula Kutmas of Joplin, Missouri; Steven Clark of Kirksville, Missouri; Tami Ruebel of Kirksville, Missouri; and Tawny Monteleone Vantomme of Grinnell, Iowa. Two cousins, Terry Steele and Cherie Steele, both of Grinnell, Iowa, preceded him in death.

A visitation will be held at 10:00 a.m., followed by a memorial service at 11:00 a.m., on Tuesday, August 26, 2025, at the Ruschmeier-Smith Funeral Home in Milan, Missouri. Following the service, Billy will be laid to rest at the Asbury Cemetery, west of Milan, Missouri, at 1:30 p.m.
