Tigers Drop Double OT Thriller Against Mexico To End Season

The Mexico Bulldogs came prepared to defend Kirksville’s running attack, dominated in the trenches and beat the Tigers in a double overtime thriller 21-14 Friday, ending Kirksville’s season at 9-1. A lot of “what ifs” and “would have, could have, should haves” in this game as the Tigers made their fair share of mistakes with ill-timed penalties and two even more ill-timed turnovers, the second of which ended Kirksville’s season. KHS took the opening kick and Kash Adams returned it to the Bulldog 43. The Tigers marched the ball down to the five before a holding penalty moved the ball back to the 15. The offense sputtered and Beckett Lyons tried a 27 yard field goal which went wide. In the second quarter, Greysen Houser caught a long pass from Ryder Lyons at the Mexico 15, had the ball punched out at the five and the ball went out the back of the end zone to give Mexico the ball at the 20. KHS did finally catch a break late in the second with a 30 yard TD pass to Adams on 4th and 15 to give the Tigers a 7-0 lead going into halftime. Mexico took the second half kickoff and totally dominated the line of scrimmage, eating up over six minutes, capping the drive with a 15 yard TD pass to Hunter Cuno to tie the game at 7-7. Another punishing Mexico drive ended with a 6 yard touchdown run by Cuno to make it 14-7 with 7:55 to play in the game. Kirksville’s defense made a stop and Corbin Denslow blocked a Mexico rugby style punt, to give KHS the ball at the Bulldog 26. On the next play, Jace Kent caught a 26 yard pass for a touchdown to tie the game at 14-14 giving KHS new life. Adams came up with an interception on Mexico’s ensuing possession, but Kirksville couldn’t cash in, sending the game to overtime. KHS was not able to score on their offensive possession, then the Tiger defense forced a Bulldog field goal attempt which sailed wide to the left to send the game into a second OT. Mexico had the ball first and on 4th and 10, Mexico’s Kaden Benne threw a wobbly 12 yard pass to Korbyn Dorsey in the end zone to give the Bulldogs a 21-14 lead. Kirksville then fumbled the ball at the Mexico 10 yard line on their next possession which was recovered by Mexico ending the game 21-14. Our next broadcast, doubleheader basketball at Highland, Tuesday November 26th.
