Atlanta 5 – ST. LOUIS 2… Matt Olson homered and stroked a pair of run-scoring doubles as the Braves completed a sweep of the Cardinals. Bryce Elder (1-0) pitched two-hit ball over six scoreless innings.

MILWAUKEE 7 – N.Y. Mets 6… Garrett Mitchell’s homer to lead off the bottom of the ninth inning gave the Brewers a walk-off win over the Mets. Joey Wiemer cracked a three-run homer for Milwaukee. Jesse Winker lined a two-run double.

Chi. Cubs – CINCINNATI – Chi. Cubs (ppd)… Rain in Cincinnati forced postponement of yesterday’s Reds-Cubs game. It has been rescheduled for September 1.

AMERICAN LEAGUE
TEXAS 5 – Baltimore 2… Josh Jung singled home a run in the bottom of the first inning and connected for a tie-breaking two-run homer in the sixth to lead the Rangers past the Orioles. Jacob deGrom (1-0) allowed two runs on two hits over six innings and struck out 11. One of the runs he allowed was unearned.

HOUSTON 8 – Detroit 2… Chas McCormick and Jeremy Peña hit two-run homers, Kyle Tucker added a solo shot and the Astros handled the Tigers. Cristian Javier (1-0) gave up a run on five hits over six innings.

Cleveland 6 – OAKLAND 4 (10 innings)… Will Brennan’s RBI grounder brought home a tie-breaking run and Steven Kwan homered in the top of the 10th inning as the Guardians outlasted the Athletics. Cam Gallagher’s two-run double broke a scoreless tie in the sixth and Andres Gimenez singled home two runs in the seventh.

L.A. Angels 4 – SEATTLE 3… Shohei Ohtani (1-0) held the Mariners to a run on three hits over six innings and singled home a run in the Angels’ win. Logan O’Hoppe cracked a go-ahead two-run homer in the bottom of the second inning.

Toronto 3 – KANSAS CITY 0… Alec Manoah (1-0) pitched one-hit ball over seven innings and two relievers completed the Blue Jays’ shutout of the Royals. Vladimir Guerrero went deep for Toronto.

INTERLEAGUE
N.Y. YANKEES 4 – Philadelphia 1… Gerrit Cole (2-0) limited the Phillies to a run on three hits over 6-1/3 innings and the Yankees breezed to the win. Gleyber Torres produced a pair of two-run singles and Jose Trevino homered with a runner aboard for New York.

Tampa Bay 7 – WASHINGTON 2… Wander Franco’s two-run homer in the top of the third inning gave the Rays the lead for good in their defeat of the Nationals. Harold Ramirez had a couple of hits, including a solo homer. Shane McClanahan (2-0) surrendered two runs on five hits over six innings.

Pittsburgh 4 – BOSTON 1… The Pirates eased past the Red Sox to finish off a series sweep. Carlos Santana homered and doubled home a run. Mitch Keller (1-0) gave up a run on four hits over seven innings.

Miami 5 – MINNESOTA 2… Jorge Soler’s second homer of the game was a three-run shot and capped a four-run bottom of the eighth inning that carried the Marlins past the Twins. Bryan De La Cruz sparked the uprising with an RBI single.

CHI. WHITE SOX 7 – San Francisco 3… Gavin Sheets drove in three runs with a pair of singles and the White Sox downed the Giants. Yoan Moncada had a couple of hits, including an RBI single. Dylan Cease (1-0) allowed just a J.D. Davis homer over five innings.
