NATIONAL LEAGUE
ST. LOUIS 4 – Chi. Cubs 3… Lars Nootbaar lifted a game-tying sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh inning and singled home the winning run in the ninth as the Cardinals topped the Cubs in a doubleheader opener. Nolan Gorman and Paul Goldschmidt hit solo homers for St. Louis.
ST. LOUIS 7 – Chi. Cubs 2… Tyler O’Neill cracked a tie-breaking three-run homer in the bottom of the seventh inning as the Cardinals put away the Cubs to claim a sweep of the twinbill. Nolan Arenado hit a two-run, first-inning homer. Jose Quintana held Chicago to a run on one hit over six innings but reliever Jordan Hicks (3-5) was credited with the win.
PITTSBURGH 5 – Milwaukee 4 (10 innings)… Bryan Reynolds doubled home the tying run in the bottom of the 10th inning and came around to score on a wild pitch to give the Pirates a walkoff win over the Brewers. Tucupita Marcano and Ben Gamel each had a couple of hits and an RBI.
L.A. Dodgers 5 – SAN FRANCISCO 3… Mookie Betts connected for a go-ahead three-run homer in the top of the fourth inning and the Dodgers held off the Giants to complete a four-game sweep. Gavin Lux had a couple of hits, including an RBI single.
Colorado 7 – SAN DIEGO 3… Ryan McMahon opened the scoring with a two-run double in the top of the second inning and belted a three-run homer in the fifth to lead the Rockies past the Padres. Jose Iglesias had three hits and knocked in two runs.
PHILADELPHIA 5 – Washington 4… The Phillies edged the Braves in a game that was halted after five innings due to rain in Philadelphia. Alec Bohn blasted a three-run homer to cap a four-run third inning.
N.Y. METS 6 – Atlanta 4… Pete Alonso homered with a runner aboard, Tyler Naquin smacked a pair of solo homers and the Mets powered their way past the Braves. Daniel Vogelbach added a solo shot. Carlos Carrasco (12-4) allowed three runs on four hits over six innings.
AMERICAN LEAGUE
Oakland 8 – L.A. ANGELS 7… The Athletics got two-run doubles from Ramon Laureano and Sean Murphy, along with a two-run homer from Seth Brown, during a six-run top of the third inning and went on to edge an Angels team that tied a record with seven solo homers in the loss. Laureano added a two-run homer in the sixth.
Houston 6 – CLEVELAND 0… Justin Verlander (15-3) pitched two-hit ball over six innings on his way to his major league-leading 15th victory and three relievers completed the Astros’ shutout of the Guardians. Chas McCormick knocked in three runs with a solo homer and pair of RBI singles. Martin Maldonado drove in Houston’s other three runs with a two-run double and solo homer.
Tampa Bay 6 – DETROIT 2… Brandon Lowe had three hits, including a two-run homer, and knocked in three runs to lead the Rays past the Tigers. Randy Arozarena went 4-for-5 with two RBIs. Jeffrey Springs (4-3) surrendered just two unearned runs on four hits over six innings.
Toronto 9 – MINNESOTA 3… Vladimir Guerrero, Jr., belted a three-run homer and Teoscar Hernandez went deep with the bases empty as the Blue Jays thrashed the Twins. George Springer and Lourdes Gurriel, Jr., drove in two runs apiece. Alek Manoah (12-5) allowed two runs on two hits over six innings.
TEXAS 3 – Chi. White Sox 2… Marcus Semien’s sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh inning proved to be the difference in the Rangers’ win over the White Sox. Taveras and pinch-hitter Meibrys Viloria produced run-scoring singles.
KANSAS CITY 7 – Boston 3… Bobby Witt, Jr., singled home a tie-breaking run and Salvador Perez hit a three-run homer during a four-run bottom of the seventh inning that carried the Royals past the Red Sox. Perez also singled home a run. MJ Melendez homered to lead off the first.
