NATIONAL LEAGUE
Pittsburgh 4 – CHI. CUBS 3… Kevin Newman had two hits and drove in a run as the Pirated held off the Cubs. Dillon Peters (3-0) pitched 2 2/3 scoreless innings in relief of JT Brubaker and ran his season-opening scoreless streak to 10 1/3 innings over five appearances.
CINCINNATI 4 – St. Louis 1… The Reds downed the Cardinals to end their 11-game losing streak. Colin Moran drove in two runs. Nick Lodolo (1-2) pitched three-hit ball over 5 1/3 scoreless innings in recording his first major league win.
San Francisco 12 – WASHINGTON 3… Joc Pederson homered twice, doubled and knocked in three runs as the Giants bombed the Nationals to complete a three-game sweep. Wilmer Flores produced three run-scoring singles. Logan Webb (2-1) allowed three runs on seven hits over 6 2/3 innings.
Miami 5 – ATLANTA 4… The Marlins took a 5-1 lead into the ninth inning and hung on to edge the Braves. Garrett Cooper had three hits and drove in two runs. Jesús Luzardo (1-1) limited Atlanta to a run on two hits over five innings.
L.A. Dodgers 10 – SAN DIEGO 2… Cody Bellinger homered twice and knocked in four runs to lead the Dodgers in the romp over the Padres. Freddie Freeman added a two-run blast. Clayton Kershaw (3-0) allowed a run on four hits over five innings.
N.Y. Mets 6 – ARIZONA 2… Tylor Megill (3-0) surrendered just two runs on four hits over 6 2/3 innings and the Mets cruised past the Diamondbacks. J.D. Davis smacked a solo homer. Francisco Lindor had a couple of hits, including an RBI single.
Milwaukee 1 – PHILADELPHIA 0… Christian Yelich lifted a sacrifice fly in the top of the ninth inning to score Jace Peterson with the game’s only run in the Brewers’ win over the Phillies. The game featured a duel between Milwaukee starter Eric Lauer, who struck out 13 over six innings, and his counterpart Aaron Nola, who fanned nine in seven innings of work.
AMERICAN LEAGUE
N.Y. YANKEES 10 – Cleveland 2… DJ LeMahieu doubled home a run and homered with a runner aboard as the Yankees clobbered the Guardians to finish off a three-game sweep. Anthony Rizzo and LoCastro blasted two-run homers. Gerrit Cole (1-0) pitched four-hit ball over 6-2/3 scoreless innings.
TAMPA BAY 5 – Boston 2… The Rays overcame an early two-run deficit to top the Red Sox. Pinch-hitter Ji-Man Choi delivered a game-tying, two-run double during a three-run bottom of the fifth inning. Yandy Diaz added a solo homer in the seventh. Shane McClanahan (1-1) became Tampa Bay’s first starting pitcher to get a win this season.
MINNESOTA 6 – Chi. White Sox 4 (10 innings)… Byron Buxton’s second homer of the game was a three-run shot in the bottom of the 10th inning that lifted the Twins over the White Sox. Buxton tied the game with a two-run blast in the seventh.
HOUSTON 8 – Toronto 7 (10 innings)… Rookie Jeremy Peña homered with a runner aboard in the bottom of the 10th inning to power the Astros past the Blue Jays. Michael Brantley also connected for a two-run homer as Houston snapped a four-game skid and ended Toronto’s four-game winning streak.
OAKLAND 2 – Texas 0… Cole Irvin (2-1) and three relievers combined on a four-hitter as the Athletics blanked the Rangers. Irvin allowed just one hit over five innings. Stephen Piscotty provided the game’s only offense with a two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh inning.
L.A. ANGELS 7 – Baltimore 6… Jo Adel unloaded a grand slam during a six-run bottom of the first inning but the Angels’ needed a seventh inning run to squeak past the Orioles. Shohei Ohtani crossed the plate with the decisive run when Taylor Ward drew a bases-loaded walk.
SEATTLE 5 – Kansas City 4 (12 innings)… Jesse Winker’s broken-bat single in the bottom of the 12th inning brought home Adam Frazier with the winning run and gave the Mariners a sweep of the three-game series. Ty France had three hits, including a two-run homer on the third pitch of the game.
INTERLEAGUE
Colorado 6 – DETROIT 2… Randal Grichuk went 3-for-4 with a two-run homer as the Rockies downed the Tigers. Charlie Blackmon had four hits, scored twice and drove in two runs. Chad Kuhl (2-0) allowed a run on four hits over six innings.
