The Kirksville Tigers overcame brutal field conditions to score three times in the second half and beat Fulton 20-0 Friday. Nearly every Tiger celebrated after the game by sliding head first through the mud and quickly covered any clean spot that might have remained on their uniforms. Even coach Kevin Krietemeyer joined in by taking a dive into the mud with his trademark white dress shirt and black tie. The first half ended in a scoreless tie as this week’s heavy rain in Fulton wreaked havoc on the natural grass field, which in turn wreaked havoc on the offenses of both teams. But in the third quarter coach Krietemeyer reached down into the playbook on a critical fourth down and goal at the Fulton 4 yard line. Quarterback Isaac Danielson shifted out of his position and went in motion to the left. The ball was snapped directly into the hands of Jaden Ballinger who took it in for the game’s first touchdown with 5:20 to play in the 3rd quarter. An unsuccessful 2 point try kept the score 6-0. On Fulton’s ensuing possession, John Behnen came up with a big interception setting up the Tigers deep in Fulton territory. Danielson quickly capitalized by running the ball into the end zone from 18 yards out with 3:56 to play in the period. KHS had a 12-0 lead after another unsuccessful 2 point try. Midway through the fourth quarter the Tigers put an exclamation point to the night with Danielson’s 10 yard run into the end zone with 5:45 to play to take a 20-0 lead after a good 2 point conversion. Danielson finished with 114 yards rushing, and was 10 of 18 through the air with 83 yards. In all KHS put up 251 yards of offense. Fulton finished with -12 yards on the ground and 132 passing yards, but turned the ball over four times. The Tiger defense continued their mastery of forcing the opposition into turning the ball over on downs three times. The Tigers committed only one turnover. KHS climbs to 5-3 overall and 4-1 in the NCMC. Next, the Tigers return home to face Capital City High. The Crusaders lost to Winnetonka of Kansas City 47-21.
