MLB Scores Wednesday 9-29

MLB SCOREBOARD… Three division titles and three wild card spots remain unclaimed with the 2021 Major League Baseball regular season coming to a close on Sunday.

NATIONAL LEAGUE
SAN FRANCISCO 1 – Arizona 0… Kris Bryant’s sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh inning scored Steven Duggar with the game’s only run as the Giants clipped the Diamondbacks to remain two games ahead of the second-place L.A. Dodgers in the NL West race. The game featured a duel between San Francisco starter Alex Wood and his counterpart Merrill Kelly, but neither got a decision.

L.A. DODGERS 11 – San Diego 9.. Corey Seager connected for a tie-breaking two-run homer to cap a five-run bottom of the eighth inning that carried the Dodgers past the Padres. Max Muncy, AJ Pollock and Cody Bellinger hit bases-empty homers in the inning. Pollock also homered with a runner aboard in the first for L.A., which blew a 5-1 lead and overcame a 9-5 deficit.

ATLANTA 7 – Philadelphia 2…. The Braves cruised past the Phillies and moved within a victory or another Philadelphia loss of their fourth straight NL East title. Austin Riley had a couple of hits and drove in three runs. Max Fried (14-7) allowed two runs on four hits over seven innings. One of the runs he allowed was unearned.

Milwaukee 4 – ST. LOUIS 0… Adrian Houser (10-6) pitched three-hit ball over five innings and four relievers completed the shutout as the NL Central-champion Brewers snapped the Cardinals’ 17-game winning streak. Daniel Vogelbach cracked a two-run homer. St. Louis has clinched the NL’s second wild card.

COLORADO 10 – Washington 5… The Rockies doubled up on the Nationals in a game delayed two hours by rain. Ryan McMahon belted a three-run homer. Trevor Story went 4-for-4 with three runs scored.

Chi. Cubs 3 – PITTSBURGH 2… Willson Contreras lifted a sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth inning and doubled home two runs in the seventh to push the Cubs’ past the Pirates.

Miami 3 – N.Y. METS 2… The Marlins scored all three runs in the top of the eighth inning and held off the Mets. Miguel Rojas stroked a two-run single.

AMERICAN LEAGUE
Boston 6 – BALTIMORE 0… The Red Sox blanked the Orioles and moved within a game of New York Yankees in the race for the AL’s first wild card. Nathan Eovaldi (11-9) allowed four hits over six innings and three relievers shut the door. J.D. Martinez and Hunter Renfroe hit solo homers. Martinez also lined a two-run double.

SEATTLE 4 – Oakland 2… Ty France’s sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh inning scored a tie-breaking run and Abraham Toro added a solo homer in the eighth as the Mariners fought off the Athletics and closed within a half-game of Boston and 1-1/2 games of the N.Y. Yankees in the AL wild-card race. Jarred Kelenic doubled home Seattle’s first two runs.

TORONTO 6 – N.Y. Yankees 5… Bo Bichette’s second homer of the game broke a tie in the bottom of the eighth inning and sent the Blue Jays past the Yankees. The victory kept Toronto a game behind Boston and two games behind New York in the AL wild-card race. Marcus Semien homered with a runner aboard and set a major league record for second-basemen with his 44th home run of the season. The loss was New York’s first in eight games.

Tampa Bay 7 – HOUSTON 0… Drew Rasmussen (4-1) and three relievers combined on a three-hitter as the AL East-champion Rays shut out the Astros and clinched the top seed in the American League playoffs. Ji-Man Choi blasted a three-run homer and Brandon Lowe added a two-run shot. Houston’s magic number for clinching the AL West remains at one.

MINNESOTA 5 – Detroit 2… Jorge Polanco connected for a three-run homer to help power the Twins past the Tigers. Michael Pineda (9-8) allowed one run and scattered eight hits over 5-2/3 innings.

L.A. Angels 7 – TEXAS 2… Jack Mayfield’s tie-breaking RBI single in the top of the sixth inning sparked a four-run rally that carried the Angels past the Rangers. Juan Lagares knocked in two runs with a single and a double.

KANSAS CITY 10 – Cleveland 5… The Royals put away the Indians after blowing an early 5-1 lead. Hunter Dozier legged out a tie-breaking two-run triple in the bottom of the eighth inning and scored on a wild pitch. Salvador Perez drilled a three-run homer.

INTERLEAGUE
CHI. WHITE SOX 6 – Cincinnati 1… Carlos Rodón (13-5) surrendered just one hit over five scoreless innings and the AL Central-champion White Sox breezed past the Reds 6-1 on Wednesday night. Gavin Sheets homered with a runner aboard and Tim Anderson smacked a solo shot.
