The St. Louis Cardinals took game one of their big weekend series with San Diego by claiming an 8-2 victory Friday in St. Louis. The Cardinals set the tone by scoring three runs in the first inning, highlighted by a two run homer by Tyler O’Neill. Dylan Carlson homered in the fourth to make it 4-0. Then Carlson hit a grand slam in the eighth to make it 8-2, which would be the final.
Miles Mikolas picked up the win, allowing no runs on three hits over 5 2/3 innings.
The Cardinals are still all alone in the number two wild card spot, one game ahead of the Reds, San Diego is 1 1/2 out, the Phillies are 2 1/2 out.
Cincinnati beat the Dodgers 3-1, Philadelphia beat the Mets 4-3.
Game two is Saturday with Adam Wainwright on the mound for St. Louis. 5:20 with the pregame and the first pitch at 6:15 on KIRX.
