NATIONAL LEAGUE
SAN FRANCISCO 6 – San Diego 1… The Giants breezed past the Padres for ninth straight win. Buster Posey had a couple of hits, including a solo homer. Anthony DeSclafani (12-6), gave up a run on three hits over 6-2/3 innings. San Francisco remains 2-1/2 games in front of the second-place L.A. Dodgers in the NL West.
L.A. DODGERS 8 – Arizona 4… The Dodgers joined San Francisco as the only two tams to clinch a postseason berth. They got homers from Max Muncy, Trea Turner and Will Smith in securing their ninth consecutive postseason appearance. Tony Gonsolin (3-1 pitched two-hit ball over five scoreless innings.
Colorado 5 – ATLANTA 4… Brendan Rodgers connected for a tiebreaking, two-run homer in the top of the fifth inning and the Rockies made it stand in downing the Braves. Trevor Story also went deep. Jon Gray (8-10) surrendered two runs on five hits over five innings.
St. Louis 7 – N.Y. METS 6 (11 innings)… The Cardinals scored three runs in the top of the 11th inning and hung on to outlast the Mets. Edmundo Sosa sparked the rally with a run-scoring single and pinch-hitter Andrew Knizner added a two-run single. Tyler O’Neill homered and drove in three runs for St. Louis, which moved a half-game ahead of Cincinnati in the race for the NL’s second wild card.
PITTSBURGH 6 – Cincinnati 5… Pirates starter Dillon Peters (1-2) scattered five hits over five shutout innings and the Pirates held off the Reds. Yoshi Tsutsugo sparked three-run rallies in the bottoms of the first and fifth innings with RBI singles.
Chi. Cubs 6 – PHILADELPHIA 3… Patrick Wisdom and Alfonso Rivas hit back-to-back homers during a four-run top of the fifth inning and the Cubs went on to double up on the Phillies. Adrian Sampson (1-2) allowed two runs on four hits over five innings.
WASHINGTON 8 – Miami 2… The Nationals put away the Marlins with a four-run bottom of the eighth inning. Ryan Zimmerman homered in the second. Erick Fedde (7-9) allowed a run on three hits over five innings.
AMERICAN LEAGUE
Cleveland 3 – MINNESOTA 1 (7 innings)… Triston McKenzie (5-6) held the Twins to a run on hits over innings and the Indians took the opener of a doubleheader. Austin Hedges doubled home Harold Ramirez with a tie-breaking run in the top of the seventh and final inning. Yu Chang followed with an RBI single.
MINNESOTA 6 – Cleveland 3 (7 innings)… The Twins came up with four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to erase an early three-run deficit on their way to claiming a split of the twinbill. Ryan Jeffers lined a two-run double and homered with a runner aboard.
N.Y. Yankees 7 – BALTIMORE 2… Gerrit Cole (15-7) held the Orioles to a run on four hits over five innings and the Yankees backed him with five home runs. Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton, Luke Voit, Joey Gallo and DJ LeMahieu all circled the bases.
Tampa Bay 2 – TORONTO 0… Drew Rasmussen (3-1) combined with four relievers on a three-hitter and the Rays blanked the Blue Jays to become the first AL team to reach 90 wins. Brandon Lowe and Ji-Man Choi homered for Tampa Bay.
TEXAS 8 – Houston 1… Adolis García slugged his 30th homer and the Rangers also got round-trippers from Nathaniel Lowe and DJ Peters in thrashing the Astros. Jordan Lyles (9-11) gave up only three singles over seven scoreless innings.
CHI. WHITE SOX 9 – L.A. Angels 3… Rookie Gavin Sheets hit a three-run homer and singled home a run as the White Sox put away the Angels. Luis Robert drilled a solo homer.
KANSAS CITY 10 – Oakland 7… The Royals overcame an early six-run deficit in getting past the Athletics. Salvador Perez blasted a go-ahead three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth inning. Kansas City also got homers from Kyle Isbel and Hunter Dozier.
Boston 8 – SEATTLE 4… Kyle Schwarber lined a tie-breaking bases-clearing double and Alex Verdugo hit a two-run homer during a five-run top of the eighth inning that carried the Red Sox past the Mariners. J.D. Martinez and Bobby Dalbec hit solo homers.
INTERLEAGUE
DETROIT 1 – Milwaukee 0 (11 innings)… Derek Hill’s double to lead off the bottom of the 11th inning scored Victor Reyes with the game’s only run as the Tigers toped the Brewers. The two teams managed just seven hits combined.
