Cardinals Outlast Dodgers

Adam Wainwright pitched into the ninth inning and Yadier Molina homered, helping the St. Louis Cardinals top the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-4 on Wednesday night. Tyler O’Neill also connected for the Cardinals, and Edmundo Sosa had an RBI single.

Wainwright (15-7) sailed into the ninth, but he was replaced by Giovanny Gallegos after Corey Seager‘s RBI single got the Dodgers within two. Will Smith then hit a sacrifice fly before Gallegos struck out Chris Taylor for his fifth save.

Wainwright allowed seven hits, struck out four and walked none. The 40-year-old right-hander improved to 8-1 in his last nine starts.

The Cardinals will start RHP Jake Woodford (2-3, 4.47 ERA) in the series finale this afternoon, 11:20 with the pregame and the first pitch at 12:15 on KIRX.

In the wild card chase, the Dodgers are the number one team, 13 1/2 over number two San Diego, the Reds are one game out, the Phillies are three games out, the Cardinals are 3 1/2 out, the Mets are 4 1/2 behind.
