Kirksville Tigers Drop Football Opener In Thriller

Being able to run the football with a fourth quarter lead is money in the bank, and Macon beat the Kirksville Tigers Friday by doing just that 42-41. A game that featured a lot of scoring and a lot of offense by both teams boiled down to basics of being able to run and block which led to a Macon victory. A Kirksville punt by Kendrick Hartman was downed inside the Macon one yard line by Jalen Kent with Macon leading by one midway through the fourth quarter. Macon put on a healthy dose of rushing by Maurice Magruder, Bryant Carpenter and Trevin Shrum, picking up first downs as the clock ticked away. KHS would get the ball back with 45 seconds to play, but that would not be enough time and Macon hangs on for the win. Kirksville took a 28-6 lead into the locker room, but ball control and efficent passing by Macon quarterback Mykel Linear brought Macon back in the game. Two long scoring strikes to Carpenter from Linear within 40 seconds of each other in the fourth gave Macon the lead and eventual victory. Randon Baumgartner scored four touchdowns for KHS, one of which was a nifty 75 yard kickoff return early in the fourth. Baumgartner finished with 6 catches for 166 yards. Kirksville quarterback Isaac Danielson threw for 310 yards and five touchdowns. Linear threw for 360 yards and five touchdowns to go along with 81 rushing yards. Kirksville’s Landon Yardley rushed for 121 yards. Kirksville’s Rileigh McLain was 3 for 4 on PAT’s in her history making debut for the Tigers. Next week, the Tigers make the trip to Chillicothe to renew another early season rivalry.
