Cards Pen Breaks Down Again In Loss To Braves

Austin Riley homered and Ehire Adrianza drove in the go-ahead run with the first of four straight bases-loaded walks as the Atlanta Braves scored six times in the eighth inning to complete a three-game sweep of the St. Louis Cardinals with an 8-4 victory Thursday night.

Riley’s two-out, two-run homer off Giovanny Gallegos in the eighth tied the game at 4 and denied Cardinals starter Wade LeBlanc his first win in more than a year. The homer came one night after Gallegos gave up three runs in two-thirds of an inning while taking the loss.

RHP Jack Flaherty (left oblique strain) will make this third rehab start Friday night for Double-A Springfield. Mike Shildt expects Flaherty to throw around 75 pitches.

RHP Adam Wainwright (9-6, 3.53 ERA) gets the start as St. Louis hosts LHP Mike Minor (8-9, 5.31) and the Kansas City Royals in the first of three on Friday night, 6:20 with the pregame and the first pitch at 7:15 on KIRX.

First place Milwaukee leads second place Cincinnati by 7 games, the third place Cardinals are 11 1/2 out.
