Cardinals Bounce Back Against Pittsburgh

Nolan Arenado hit a two-run homer, his fourth in four games, and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-2 Tuesday night.

Tommy Edman added three singles and drove in two runs for St. Louis. which returned home after dropping three straight at the Padres.

John Gant (3-3) threw 5 1/3 innings to earn the win. He allowed two runs and five hits.

Alex Reyes pitched the ninth to record his 12th save in 12 chances.

 

Cardinals: Activated RHP Daniel Ponce de Leon (right shoulder inflammation) and 1B/OF John Nogowski (left hand bone bruise) from the 10-day Injured List. … RPH Junior Fernandez was optioned to Triple-A Memphis.

 

LF Tyler O’Neill (left middle finger fracture) has been placed on the 10-day Injured List, retroactive to May 17. O’Neill is appearing on the IL for the second time this season.  John Mozeliak said reliever Jordan Hicks will refrain from baseball-related activities for at least one month after he received an injection in his right elbow last week. … Mozeliak also said RHP Miles Mikolas (right shoulder soreness) and RHO Carlos Martínez (right ankle sprain) might be back in the rotation for the Chicago Cubs series this weekend.

 

RHP Trevor Cahill (1-4, 5.97) is to start Wednesday’s series finale game for the Pirates against RHP Jack Flaherty (7-0, 2.47), 5:50 with the pregame and the first pitch at 6:45 on KIRX.
