Arizona 5 – WASHINGTON 2… Diamondbacks starter Madison Bumgarner (1-2) held the Nationals to a run on two hits over five innings. Josh Rojas and Carson Kelly hit solo homers.
PHILADELPHIA 2 – St. Louis 0… Aaron Nola (1-1) tossed a complete-game two-hitter in shutting out the Cardinals. Bryce Harper’s bases-empty homer in the bottom of the first inning provided all the offense the Phillies needed.
San Francisco 1 – MIAMI 0… Ale Wood (1-0) limited the Marlins to three hits over five innings and four relievers provided hitless relief in the blanking of the Marlins. Alex Dickerson singled in Tommy La Stella with the game’s only run in the top of the third inning.
Pittsburgh 6 – MILWAUKEE 5 (10 innings)… Colin Moran belted a three-run homer in the top of the third inning and doubled home Bryan Reynolds with the tie-breaking run in the 10th to lead the Pirates past the Brewers. Reynolds homered with a runner aboard in the seventh.
N.Y. Mets 2 – COLORADO 1… Marcus Stroman (3-0) allowed just a run on three hits over eight innings and the Mets held off the Rockies.
SAN DIEGO 5 – L.A. Dodgers 2… Eric Hosmer came through with a tie-breaking RBI double in the bottom of the seventh inning and added a run-scoring single in the eighth as the Padres salvaged the series finale. Jake Cronenworth smacked a solo homer.
Atlanta 13 – CHI. CUBS 4… The Braves connected for four home runs during a six-run top of the first inning and never looked back in their thrashing of the Cubs. Guillermo Heredia hit a two-run homer and unloaded a grand slam. Freddie Freeman, Travis d’Arnaud and Ehire Adrianza also went deep.
AMERICAN LEAGUE
Chi. White Sox 3 – BOSTON 2… Tim Anderson homered on the game’s first pitch and the White Sox went on to edge the Red Sox in the opener of a doubleheader. Dallas Keuchel (1-0) allowed two runs on six hits over five innings.
Chi. White Sox 5 – BOSTON 1… Fermin Mercedes’ leadoff homer sparked a three-run top of the fourth inning and the White Sox cruised past the Red Sox to complete a sweep of the twinbill. Nick Madrigal doubled home a run and lifted a sacrifice fly.
Tampa Bay 4 – N.Y. YANKEES 2… Yoshi Tsutsugo stroked a tie-breaking RBI double in the top of the fifth inning and Joey Wendle added a solo homer in the ninth as the Rays finished off a series sweep and dealt the Yankees their fifth straight loss. Four pitchers combined on a three-hitter.
KANSAS CITY 2 – Toronto 0… Salvador Perez homered with a runner aboard in the bottom of the seventh inning to power the Royals past the Blue Jays. Starter Brady Singer tossed two-hit ball over six innings but didn’t get a decision.
TEXAS 1, Baltimore 0 (10 innings)… Nate Lowe’s two-out single in the bottom of the 10th inning scored Eli with the game’s only run as the Rangers outlasted the Orioles. The game featured a scoreless duel between Texas starter Kyle Gibson and his counterpart John Means.
OAKLAND 3 – Detroit 2… Matt Olson scored an unearned run in the bottom of the 10th inning and the Athletics swept the four-game series with the Tigers. Sean Murphy led of the eighth with a game-tying homer.
SEATTLE 7 – Houston 2… France hit a two-run homer and doubled home a run in the Mariners’ pounding of the Astros. Mitch Hanigar legged out a two-run triple and added a run-scoring double. Six Seattle pitchers combined on a one-hitter.
Minnesota – L.A. ANGELS (ppd)… Multiple positive COVID-19 tests on the Minnesota team forced postponement of yesterday’s Twins-Angels game. No makeup date has been announced.
INTERLEAGUE
Cleveland 6 – CINCINNATI 3… Indians starter Shane Bieber (2-1) gave up three runs on six hits over six innings and struck out 13 in a historic performance. He became the first pitcher in big league history to begin the season with four straight starts with at least 10 strikeouts. Roberto Pérez blasted a three-run homer for Cleveland. Jordan Luplow added a two-run shot. Jose Ramirez also went deep.
