The Kirksville Lady Tigers won their first district championship since 2013 with a thrilling 33-28 win over top seed Mexico Thursday. Both teams started out sluggish in the first half with a bevy of turnovers. Mexico only led by one at halftime 10-9. The teams cleaned things up in the third quarter as they battled to a 19-19 tie at the end of the period. Once again, Corinne Vorkink and Jenna Jackson sank huge free throws in the fourth to help put it away. KHS led by seven late in the fourth and go on to win 33-28. Vorkink led the way with 19 points, a perfect 4-4 at the free throw line in the second half, Jackson finished with 4 points, all at the free throw line. Kenslie Stufflebean was the only other Lady Tiger to score, she finished with 10. KHS climbs to 13-10 on the year, and pick up their first win over Mexico this year, coming in the district championship game. Kirksville moves on to the Class 5 Sectionals to play Smithville Wednesday. The early word is the game will be at Tiger Gym. We’ll let you know for sure.
