The Kirksville Lady Tigers hung on for dear life and beat Marshall 36-33 Monday in the Class 5 District 15 semifinals Monday at Tiger Gym. The lady Tigers outscored Marshall 14-4 in the second quarter to take a 22-12 lead into the locker room. KHS maintained that lead into much of the third, before Marshall’s Emma Shulte started scoring from underneath to cut the lead to 26-22 at the end of the 3rd. Marshall would get to within one at 34-33 in the fourth. That’s when Kirksville’s Jenna Jackson and Corinne Vorkink took over. Jenna found an open seam and took it in for a big layup. Marshall was forced to foul and put Kirksville at the free throw line. Jackson and Vorkink each hit two big free throws late in the fourth to keep KHS in front by three. Marshall had many chances in the final 15 seconds, but Kirksville’s defense kept the Owls from getting any good shots off, and KHS hangs on and wins 36-33. Kirksville was led by Erica Treasure with 9 points, 8 points each from Vorkink and Channing Totta. Kirksville climbs to 12-10 overall and will head to top seed Mexico Thursday for the district championship matchup with the Bulldogs at 6:00. Mexico defeated Moberly Monday 58-33.
