Dorothy Elizabeth Delaney

Dorothy Elizabeth Delaney, 89, of Kirksville, formerly of Baring, Missouri, passed away Tuesday, February 17, 2021, at the Knox County Nursing Home in Edina, Missouri.

Dorothy was born on May 23, 1931, in Rutledge, Missouri to Alex Clinton and Leona Mae McAlister Snyder; moving to Baring after the death of her father where her mother began working as telephone operator in Baring, Missouri.

She attended Baring Elementary, graduating from Baring High School in the Class of 1949.

On February 15, 1950 at the St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Baring, Missouri, Dorothy married George Joseph Delaney.

Working as a bookkeeper for several years at Kiley Oil Company and Baring Oil Company, Dorothy owned and operated Delaney Convenience Store in Baring, Missouri after retirement. She and George ran the convenience store until 1997 when they decided it was time to truly retire.

They were members of the St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Baring and the Mary Immaculate Catholic Church in Kirksville, Missouri, and Dorothy was an active member of St. Ann’s. She served two boards; Baring Senior Housing and Knox County Mutual Insurance. She was a member of the Baring Country Club and spent many enjoyable hours with friends and family at the lake.

She enjoyed traveling, crocheting and puzzle books, but a true joy was being an observer of life whether she was interacting with customers at the convenience store or watching the activity outside her picture window in her home in Kirksville. She enjoyed meeting and conversing with people, stranger or good friend.

She is survived by four children, William C. “Bill” Delaney of Kansas City, Kansas, Kathryn Sue “Kathy” Hatfield of Knox City, Missouri, Sharon E. “Sherry” and her husband John David Parsons of Novelty, Missouri and George Daniel “Danny” and his wife Leeanna Delaney of Palmyra, Missouri; five grandchildren, Lori and Kelly Hall of Ewing, Missouri, Allen and Kim Hatfield of Knox City, Missouri, Brad and MacKenzie Parsons of Kirksville, Missouri, Wesley Parsons of Novelty, Missouri and Tanner Delaney of Palmyra, Missouri; six great grandchildren, Travis and Harlie Hall, Delana and Michael Hatfield, and Brody and River Parsons; along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends.

Exactly seven years to the day, her husband George Delaney preceded her in death on February 17, 2014. Also preceding her in death are her parents Alex and Leona Snyder; two sisters, Betty (husband Lloyd Hathaway) and Mary (husband Vernon Bradley); a step-sister, Adaline (husband Hiram Palmer); three step-brothers; numerous brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, February 20, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Baring, Missouri.

Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, February 20, 2021 with the family receiving friends until service time at the Church.

Internment will be in the St. Aloysius Cemetery in Baring, Missouri following the service. Arrangements are under the direction of the Doss Funeral Home in Edina. MO.

Father Simeon Etonu will officiate and music will be provided by Brent Karhoff and Katie Delaney. Pall Bearers will be Tanner Delaney, Wesley Parsons, Travis Hall, Brad Parsons, Allen Hatfield, Kelly Hall, Eddie Bryant and Joe Delaney.

An expression of sympathy in memory of Dorothy Delaney may be left to the Knox County Nursing Home. A memorial may be left at or mailed to the Doss Funeral Home 208 N. 4th Street, Edina, Missouri 63537.
