Hannibal School District #60 has decided to delay the start of its school year.
Superintendent Susan Johnson made that recommendation, which was discussed during a two hour special board meeting on Monday.
Her recommendation was to delay the first day of school from Wednesday, August 26 to September 8 due to various factors related to COVID-19 concerns.
School board members spent two hours discussing the issue and voiced their difficulty in making a decision.
The decision to delay means that Friday night’s football game at Jeff City Helias will not take place as planned. Hannibal’s Week 2 game against Jeff City Public will be cancelled, as well.
Reportedly, this has nothing to do with the suspension of Pirate head football coach Quentin Hamner this past weekend. Authorities in Clark Co. arrested Hamner early Saturday morning and was charged with property damage and trespassing. He was released on summons to appear in court at a later date.
Hannibal is scheduled to travel to Kirksville for the Tiger’s Homecoming game October 2nd.
