Monte Michael

Monte Michael, 58, of Unionville, Missouri, passed away at Mercy Hospice in Johnston, Iowa, on Tuesday, February 11, 2020, after injuries sustained in a fall at his home.

Monte Jewell Michael was born in Unionville, Missouri, on October 4, 1961, the son of Nelson and Amber (Valentine) Michael. Monte grew up in Putnam County, Missouri, and graduated from Putnam County High School in 1980. Throughout his childhood, he enjoyed spending time going on adventures with his family and friends. He moved to Denton, Texas, in 1982, where he managed a concrete company in commercial construction. Monte moved back to Unionville in 1985. He was married to Tammy Van Blaricome for six years and from that marriage they had two children, Brad and Chris. Monte worked with his father at Michael’s Foundation and Ready Mix and then he and his brother Nicky bought the business in 1994. In 1996 they split the business with Monte taking the basement business. Monte continued to operate Michael’s Foundation Co. until he retired in 2003.

Monte had a passion for hunting and fishing and he liked to share that passion with others, often acting as an unofficial outfitter. He knew the family farm like he did his own living room. He liked to fish and restock ponds in his area. He would often provide for the West Liberty Baptist Church fish fries. Monte was a trustee at the church and mowed the church lawn. He also ran the maintainer for his township and help Nicky and Tanner on the farm. Monte enjoyed life on the farm with his friends and family whether he was hunting, fishing, farming, or just driving around watching the wildlife.

Monte is survived by his two sons, Brad (fiancé Jenna Bankers) Michael of Adel, Iowa, and Chris (Mary) Michael of Corydon, Iowa. His three grandchildren are Makenzi, Alleria, and Keanu Michael. He is also survived by his mother, Amber Michael, two brothers, Nicky (Connie) Michael, Byron “Bub” Michael, and a sister, Gina Michael, all of Unionville, Missouri. Nieces, nephews, cousins, and aunts and uncles also survive.

Monte was preceded in death by his father, Nelson, in 2016.
