Janet Shenefield

Janet Shenefield, 70, of Unionville, Missouri, passed away at the Putnam County Memorial Hospital on January 20, 2020, after a brief illness.

Janet Sue Munden was born in Unionville, Missouri on April 6, 1949, the daughter of Basil Junior and Lois (Smith) Munden, who preceded her in death. She was raised in eastern Putnam County and graduated from Unionville High School in 1967. She married Gail Brown on September 23, 1967, and three children were born to this union: Lynnette, Matthew, and Christopher. At the encouragement of a good friend, Bess, Janet began college after the children were in school. She obtained a Bachelor’s degree in teaching from Northeast Missouri State University (now Truman) and later obtained her Master’s degree. Janet did substitute teaching in different schools in Iowa as the family moved around. She then opened a day-care in Polk City, Iowa, before working with different agencies to provide learning and training for adults with learning disabilities. She held that position for 20 years in various locations in southern Iowa before retiring.

Janet had an indomitable and engaging spirit. She loved to take adventures with her family, especially their yearly vacations. She was friendly (having long time friendships) and generous and always sought the best in others. She put her whole self into whatever she attempted. Janet loved to read. She enjoyed actions movies and sports, especially football. Her family was her world and she was their biggest cheerleader. Janet accepted Christ as a young person and was a member at Omaha Baptist Church.

Jane is survived by her daughter, Lynnette Hicks, of Livonia, Missouri, and five grandchildren, Amanda (Kyle) Overton, Zachariah Hicks, Rachel (Jake) Hubbard, Megan Brown, and Jacob Brown, as well as three great grandchildren, Abigail and Susannah Overton and Matthew Pflum. She is also survived by a brother, Brian (Bonnie) Munden of Livonia, Missouri, as well as nieces and nephews with whom she enjoyed many happy times.

Janet was preceded in death by two sons, Christopher Brown and Matthew Brown, and a son-in-law, David Hicks.

Funeral services for Janet Shenefield will be at Playle and Collins Family Funeral Home in Unionville at 11:00 am on Friday, January 24, 2020, with visitation one hour prior to the service. Interment will be at St. John Cemetery, Livonia.
