Virginia Lee “Ginny” (Lyons) Sevits

Virginia Ginny (Lyons) Sevits, 76, of Kirksville, Missouri, passed away Tuesday, September 21, 2021 at her home under the care of Hospice of Northeast Missouri, and family by her side.

Ginny was born October 15, 1944 on her daddy’s birthday, and was the daughter of Garnett and Audrea Lyons. On October 6, 1963, Ginny married Charles Sevits and they lived within three miles of where they were born, their entire lives.

Ginny attended Mulberry Rural School through eighth grade, then ninth through twelfth grade in Kirksville, graduating in 1962. She served as room mother and kitchen worker while her kids were in school. During this time she milked their dairy cows, and drove a tractor or truck as needed, but you didn’t want to ask about her expertise pulling a mulcher. Ginny had a heart of gold and devoted her life to her family and their farm. When her grandkids started coming, Jake dubbed her “Barni” and it has continued through the years, and she took care of each of them until they started school. She also spent many years in 4-H.

Ginny attended the Mulberry Presbyterian Church growing up, where she played the piano for services. She also played piano many years for Sunday morning services at Hazel Creek Church. Ginny was a member of the Mulberry Extension Club and served on the Adair County Extension Council. She served as Mulberry Cemetery Association Treasurer for over thirty-two years.

Ginny is survived by her husband, Charles of fifty-seven years; one son, Jami (Janine) Sevits of Kirksville, MO; two daughters, Tammi Sevits and Daini Sevits both of Kirksville, MO; six grandchildren, Jake (Kaity) Sevits, Joel (Meredith) Sevits, Lola Sevits, Brady, Jenna, and Justin Farris; four great-grandchildren, Hartley, Wade, Claira, and Evie; her siblings, Gerald Lyons of Kirksville, MO, Bobby (Diana) Lyons of Kirksville, MO, and Greta Lyons of Columbia, MO, as well as a number of nieces and nephews.

Public visitation will be held Friday, September 24, 2021 from noon to 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Travis-Noe Funeral Home with service to follow. The service will be officiated by Pastor Alan Coonfield and interment will follow the service at Mulberry Cemetery, northwest of Kirksville.
