Larry Jay Phippen

Larry Jay Phippen, 86, of Unionville, Missouri, passed away at his home in the company of his loving family on Thursday, May 13, 2021.

Larry Jay Phippen was born in Charles City, IA on March 8, 1935. Larry was the son of Donald Edward and Doris Mae (Rowley) Phippen. He graduated in 1952 from East High School in Waterloo, IA. After attending Iowa State University, he began a long career with John Deere in Waterloo. Larry worked as a designer at the Product Engineering Center, he retired in 1985 with 30 years of service.

Larry married Mary Ellen Wingler in Waterloo, IA on September 15, 1957. Larry and Mary raised their family in Waterloo. After retiring, they moved to Lake Thunderhead in Unionville, Missouri, where they built their retirement home. Larry and Mary enjoyed spending their summers at the lake and their winters in South Texas for many years, where Larry enjoyed playing golf and staying active.

Larry had a deep appreciation for his family and friends. Larry was an avid crappie fisherman and Canada walleye fisherman. He and his wife Mary enjoyed entertaining at their home and hosting many fish fry get-togethers. He felt blessed to have his wife of 63 years by his side, as well as being blessed with four (4) children, eight (8) grandchildren, and six (6) great- grandchildren.

Larry is survived by his wife Mary and three children: Brett (Sally) Phippen of Ottumwa, Karen Kurtz of Wichita, Gina (Greg) Kepner of Ottumwa, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents, his son; Kurt Phippen of Arlington, Texas, and his brother; Roger Phippen of Cedar Falls, IA.

A “Celebration of Life” is planned for May 30th, 2021, at the United Methodist Church located at 110 N. 19th St. in Unionville. Visitation will be from 1-2 pm and Service at 2 pm with a small luncheon following. Arrangements are under the direction of the Playle & Jones Funeral Home in Kirksville, MO.
